The city has developed in a complementary sets of commercial, cultural and entertainment activities around the lake with libraries, conference center, corporate areas, bars, dancing and hotels.

This master plan of 150000m2 completes the 3rd side of a triangular journey connecting a future residential area with the Lake by the means of green corridors interlaced above and through the project.
Instead to disperse buildings in the land such an organic development, the MP can achieve of being a place retrofitting the used land surface by a garden on the roof.

The concept proposes a woven pattern, curled to realize variations in the continuity, allowing each part of the program to flexibly develop a series of spaces of different scales under a unitary voluminous apparatus.

The curled garden-roof is designed with walking paths, skate park, open cinema, climbing wall to retro-fit the green area taken along the lake with an entertainment and relaxation area; a "corner to see the lake" such meant by the local name WangHuJiao.

context
located on the south corner of the future built environment, the site is surrounded by 2 main landscapes.

  • the Sea and the green parks on a side.
  • the future economic zone on another side.

architectural concept= energetic concept
the requirement for this headquarter and conference center of the new economic zone was the highest possible.."a tall building, a landmark"..! In order to transform this ecological dilemna into an advantage, the concept consists in overlapping the green energy production and the office building such a semaphora.

architectural expression
as the headquarter of various companies, the neutral image match with different identities though with the following features.

  • sustainability
  • elegance
  • efficiency
  • work condition
  • confidence
  • innovation
  • quality
  • fengshui

organisation and structure
the circular organisation results on a cylinder which match with the following objectives

  • to reduce the envelop surface (13%).
  • to avoid any backside.
  • to optimize the structure with a better resistance .
  • to withstand the typhoon forces which are common in this area., reducing the building wind loads: it reaches to a lighter structure and cost reduction.
  • optimizes the view and better catch the sun beams.

sections
the offices are organised in 38 storeys around the lift and stairs core.
Each floor is 4.5m high:

  • to allow enough natural lighting to the spaces distant from the envelop.
  • to allow a mezzanine in each office and minimize the ratio offices/core.

the accesses
at the scale of the project, the accesses are defined all around the site.

  • main accesses on South and North(vehicles)
  • secondary accesses at East and West (pedestrians only).

the conference center is a facility that both relates to the city as a cultural and primary element and to the world as an international communication center.
to complete the existing "exhibition center" (EC) with a "conference center" (CC) the main questions are:

  • how does the building connect with XiAn city?
  • how does the building connect to the world as an international 1st class conference facility?

problematic
the XiAn exhibition center (EC) needs to complete its facilities with a conference center (CC). it has been located outside the EC perimeter in a mix-used area and concomitant urban pattern.

urban reading
in the master plan, the relation between EC and CC is defined by a perspective axe between the main and the secondary exhibition hall…without any spatial relation.

urban architecture concept
In this situation and program the conference center is both a part of exhibition center and part of the XiAn city as a primary element open on the world conference… a role defined by the requirement: Iconic, flexible, sustainable.
the complex is composed of the building and its garden as an integrated and connecting part.
one accesses the conference area through a sloping bridge above a water pool and garden.

architectural concept
spaces for 50, 100, 200, 500, 2000 and 3500 peoples are organized in a simple volume, alternatively occupying the total, the center or the periphery of each floor.
a surrounding stainless steel envelop, slightly inclined in the direction of the exhibition center works as a communication screen.

architectural organization
the program is articulated in 3 parts:

  1. the catering space (3500 pers.) is located on the ground floor with a mezzanine. the production area is located in the basement, accessible from the parking for the deliveries.
  2. the theater space (2000 pers.) is located on the intermediary level, as a central room with a surrounding lobby.
  3. the conferences spaces are located on the top with the workgroup rooms on the periphery and conference rooms in the center.
  4. a garden on the roof extends the complex.

A multipurpose space for every day and every body at any time, for the practice and use of sports, exhibitions, theater, ceremonies, leisure, meetings, and social activities is the problematic of this project. A neutral, though strong expression is researched to suit the multiple functions offered by the building.

*The reality of colors is defined as a physically and chemically identifiable/analyzable pigment; the material of the color…which, by the perception of the color in the eye and brain receives its content and human sense. But the eye and the reason cannot reach clear perceptions without comparisons or contrast. A color get its value when in relation with a lack of color, such white, black, grey or with a second and even several other colors. The perception of the color at the opposite of its physic-chemic reality is its psychic-physic reality. *( translated from l’Art de la Couleur / Johannes Itten)

A space of grey tints made of rough concrete and movable aluminum walls articulate within the natural light. The users by the styles and the colors of their dresses feature the atmosphere for the time and circumstance they use it (theater, sport, exhibition). The project challenges the verticality as a dialectic and chronologic response to the medieval tower sat on the other side of the valley.
To realize this sign and to preserve the environment, the program is organized vertically: the main entrance is located at the mid-height of the complex (accessible from the back side street) distributing:

  • the lower floors: the theater, the college and the gymnasium (also accessible from the courtyard)
  • the upper floors: the commercial high school.

The objective to set up the complex in the slope is also to preserve the wineyard, as well as to integrate the existing wine house to the complex.

Here below reproduced is the poems « the valaisans quatrains » written by Rainer Maria Rilke when he lived nearby the site. It has been a source of inspirations :

(Rainer Maria Rilke)

Church Saint Mary-Magdeleine / Mase / Valais / Switzerland / 1983-1985

Context
The existing church built in 1910 had important structural problems due to an inappropriate carpenter work and missing foundations just above an ancient cemetery. The tower parts were from different period since 17th century.
An architectural competition was organized to define the intervention type,

Concept – I love my Grandma with her wrinkles, please don’t lift her !
The intervention is based on a postulate: Architecture is the formal and meaningful expression of the history.
It proposes to recognize the cultural mutations and to affirm them according two typologies. After verifying the sites features to receive and give, the project will develop according the invariants (center and axe) and on the significant and witness relations of the building story then of the history.

the intervention can be defined as follow:

  1. Conservation of the sign: (memory)
  2. Introduction and expression of the modern liturgical space (concentric static) in the structure of the latin space: (linear dynamic).
This text observes, on one side, some general principle defining the design process and on another side of personal design interpretations. Daring this provocative title is I thing, pointing vulgar part of the restauratrice options of the current practice.

Architecture is the formal expression of the History
It involves that each period must be expressed by and with is built and natural environment ; this by the architectural intervention , without systematic subordination to supposed absolute values of the existing context. It is then interesting to define from the problematic and through a critical analysis, the meaning and the nature of those relations with the context. This analysis as well as the whole architecture process doesn’t operate in a linear vway, but also according the thought schemes through the successive project verifications and relations.
However it may be simply defined as follow:

the reading of the territory
the site, a built promontory, (socle) in the forefront of the village, dominating the val of Herens. The existing silhouette has a value as a sign, a landmark, the part of the wide landscape, important element of the memory: a watched/watcher position, appropriate to communicate far away.

the eyes of the history
the history is present as awareness. It doesn’t serve to deduct architectural forms, but to understand the evolution of the Christian space and its components…le centre and the axe. Combined since the roman basilicas and subordinated one to each other, along the the history of the religious architecture, generating by their properties so much meanings, they constitute and define two possible typologies of churches:

  • the church with longitudinal plan.
  • the church with central plan.
Once the the site features recognized and the axial/central typologies rediscovered, it’s from those invariants that the project will be made; excluding all barbaric shapes which would not be legitimate. We are then reducing to a defined case the infinite number of possibilities.
The conservation of the sign…It recognizes the physical, structural of the building belonging to the collective memory. It also recognizes the building effort and it’s particularly to recognize the longitudinal typology (the processional journey) as conditioning the actual experience of the religious practice. We observe then that the object it’s not the main interesting thing, but rather the essence of the relation between the parts, the semantic dialogue, the game of old and new relations, the intensity of the exchanges and the resulting emotions issues of the difficult balanced union. The project will become consistent by the material technologies for the form within the relations preliminarily defined. The materials, the textures, the light serve the relations. Assuming the cultural mutations by the container/content we recognize the building history instead of its historicity. It’s not here matter of progress on the past but rather another way for the history of architecture to exist in the present. So, at the time of the « re-plastering hysteria” and other epidermic treatments downgrading monuments, mummifying their memories, it’s legitimate to recognize architecture and history associating them, instead wasting desperately wasting their last chances.

Sat between the plain and the slope, the land cut on the top by the ascending thus diagonal road is trapezoidal. If designed according the regulation, a residual space would result in the north and a shorter garden space in the south…but the project organizes served and serving spaces in 2 distinctive volumes: the garages, laundry and hall are located in the narrow angle of the land, the life space on the south in an hemicycle, open on the garden. The added value is a possible construction on the East of the land, demonstrating that the economy is first a building implementation matter.

The conjunction of soft and rigorous lines
original text written in french by TAUREL-DORSAZ Hélène (freely translatd by ChristianBecK)

Definitely contemporary, the inside/outside conception of the house radiates a feeling of harmony created by the asymptotic soft and rigorous lines. Created by the architect Christian Beck, the house virtually fit in a polygon composed of 2 antithetical shapes:
On one side, a triangle organizing the services (garage, cellar and laundry), and on the other side, an hemicycle for the living spaces.
If the formal aspect obviously results of the architect’s own creative language, it has also been defined by the aim of integration with the existing village.

To do so, the implementation is in the sharp angle of the land, along the road to respect a fundamental parameter for the architect: the topography.
Between plain and hillside, the land articulates the two features, reinforced by the volume of the house.
The orientation of the house provides a maximum of privacy, with all windows opening on the garden side. The natural lighting is completed by a shed between the stairs and the gallery conferring the house a poetical aspect. The endless subtle light ray variations run the space luminosity with the shadows shapes and their intensities projected on the curved wall.
The interior amenities bring calm and tension within dual side by side symmetry and asymmetry completing each other. The symmetry is created by the regular room spaces distribution, as on the ground floor the living room is rimmed on sides by the kitchen and the library, while on the 2nd floor, 3 rooms are rimmed with bathrooms.

This regular space organization doesn’t generate any austerity, straight lines being enriched by the house inherent curves. As for the asymmetry, it appears in the stairs, as diagonal journeys along the curved wall, and is reinforced by unexpected little space, such the triangular angle in the hall or the niche which rhythms the living room.
Regarding the materials, they have been chosen to reinforce the soft whole sobriety. White painted concrete with some rough surfaces for the wall, granite for the floors.
The evocation of the house would not be complete without describing the garden harmoniously structured by trees in a way to extend the living room outside.
Finally, it is important to underline that the cost of this house is lower than a traditional construction and allows observing that building a contemporary house, is a frame of mind more than exclusive financial considerations.

This situation being not in line with the needs of villages, the problem defined by the author as a base for the project development concerns the neutral multipurpose aspect of the space, targeting to use it as well for sports activities, culture (theater, music), leisure, events, seminars, etc... It's this institutional neutrality which is researched, a strong identity space, without any particular affectation but oppositely the neutral expression of multiple possibilities.

40000m3 program for this maintenance center as follow:

  • a road maintenance administration, the trucks garage, the salt and sand storage.
  • a police station, the usual administrative facilities, parking places, ambulances and first care station.

the site is featured by a fold in the land parallel to the valley and located between the road and the village.
the proximity of the church and the built quality of the village (a national protected site) define the sensitive nature of the site.
the project is composed of the following 3 parts:

  • the underground trucks garage sat in the fold realize a perfect platform for a village public place.
  • the sand and salt tanks sat on the platform.
  • the bridge sat downstream the platform close the composition and linking the opposite hills.
one pile of the bridge is occupied by the the police station and the other one by the administration of the road maintenance service.
  • apartments are localized in the bridge deck.

this project was recognized as the contest winners then received a "mention" due to a distance to the plot limit... allegedly "too short" such controlled to say so... through a control process purposely ran by the cantonal architect... (a courageous administration officer used to say: "it's a good project but it has to stay in the drawer...")

the lake, the dam and the mine cliff
XinAnJiang (the lake of thousand islands) is an artificial field created by an hydroelectric dam in the 50s.

this proposal was outlined to oppose a hotel project designed as a false-boat cruises ... supposed to be made of concrete along the shore, such drawn by a Sino-American company.
the proposal is to lean the hotel ahead an old stone extraction mine in order to rehabilitate the site.

the lake extends to the cliff allows access to the hotel by boat in an aquatic lobby. the hotel becomes the third stage of the site's history:

OPTIONS B1, B2, A

option A
